Finally, it was possible to do a detailed study of each year’s actual sales and compare them the to the information suggested in the existing serial number chart. (1927 to 1975) After several trips to Paris and several thousand hours of research and study, the original shipping data was collected and organized. The first phase of the research was to study the records from the beginning up to the end of the Mark VI era. Whether earlier notebooks were lost or were never kept is unfortunately unknown.
The data started at serial #5000 and continued for over 75 years. In most cases, there was no mention of what model was being produced.

But there are problems with the existing chart, such as the timing of the introduction of the different models. Many saxophonists use it as the authority for determining when an instrument was made. After some research I suspect that it is a series II. I am trying to overhaul / restore a Dolnet. Even so, its possible from this record to assemble a basic serial number chart for these instruments. The log book shows the serial numbers jumping around quite a bit for the Selmer/Adolphe Sax saxophones. Instruments manufactured after 1936 range in serial number from 1350-3600. The record is much less complete after 1936. We welcome all comments and contributions. Although the Dolnet and 26M weren’t in what I would consider perfect playing condition, the Modell 3 still won in terms of sound in my book- although the other horns look quite a. The Modell 3- the New Aristo needs an overhaul first. I have since gotten the Dolnet, New Aristo, and 26M mentioned above in and played the Dolnet and the 26M vs.
